BAREFOOT COLLEGE ZANZIBAR
A sustainable world from the ground up
Supporting the rural livelihoods of women in Zanzibar
Barefoot College Zanzibar, a branch of BCI, provides educational opportunities for rural women with little access to knowledge or resources. By teaching them solar engineering, beekeeping and sewing skills, we provide a lucrative capacity-building that inspires sustainable and equitable solutions across East Africa.
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER, ENTERPRISE & EMPOWERMENT
We place women at the heart of bringing light to their communities- creating a place of learning, discovery and transformation for poor rural women living on less than $1.20 a day who have never had access to formal education. Barefoot College Zanzibar is a centre where indigenous wisdom and skills are celebrated and valued and the belief is held that access to light enables all development. We are committed to catalysing the transformation of poor rural communities so they can sustain and manage their own initiatives into the future. They themselves thus create stronger civil society, give better educational outcomes for their children and provide sustainable economic independence for women.
